Round 9: Andreikin defeats Jobava and takes the lead |
In a ninth round of FIDE Grand Prix Dmitry Andreikin took the solo lead after defeating Baadur Jobava. Baadur misplayed in the opening and let his opponent to get huge advantage which Andreikin converted into a full point. In yet another decisive game Shakhriyar Mamedyarov won against Dmitry Jakovenko, who blundered in the time trouble. After 9 rounds Shakhriyar shares the second place together with Hikaru Nakamura, who drew with Sergey Karjakin. Teimour Radjabov keeps on playing Berlin Defence with both colors but the outcome remains the same so far - draw against Fabiano Caruana today. Full of fight games Vachier-Lagrave-Giri and Kasimdzhanov-Gelfand finished in a draw.

Dmitry Jakovenko managed to get clear advantage in strategically risky variation of Dutch defence, played by Shakhriyar. Inaccurate choices 8...de5?! ( 8...Nc6 ) and 9...Qe7?! ( 9...0-0! when 10. Qd5+ Kh8 11. Ne5? doesn't work in view of 11...c6! ) brought Black in a very difficult position. White passed by a winning line 16.ef5! gf5 17.Ne3! but even though had better position. An unnecessary pawn sacrifice 26.c5?! and then 27.Qa2?! completely changed evaluation of the position. Being short of time, Jakovenko made another mistake, and his position became hopeless.

Trying to surprise his opponent, Baadur played 1.d4 d5 2.Nc3!? It's not surprising that Baadur plays risky chess but some of his decisions turned to be too risky today. After 10.gh5?! and 13.Na4? it was only Black, who was fighting for victory in that game.
Kasimdzhanov 1/2-1/2 Gelfand.
Rustam's preparation at his best! The opponents followed the game Ivanchuk-Gelfand, 2008, and 19.Qb6! was White's improvement. Boris spent a lot of time, trying to solve new problems and ended up with 10 minutes for 15 moves! Newertheless, with energetic play Boris created serious counterplay and after some simplifications this exciting game ended in a draw.
Karjakin 1/2-1/2 Nakamura.
In King's Indian defence Hikaru chose with 7...Nh5!?, which is not a main line here. A very complex and hard-to-play position arised from the opening and Sergey Karjakin spent too much time trying to find a good plan for White. Perhaps, White could have tried to advance on the Queenside with a3 and b4, but this plan was obviously considered as too risky by Sergey.
Radjabov 1/2 -1/2 Caruana.
One more Berlin defence and 11...Bb4 is a deviation from previous games here but players quickly got quite typical Berlin position. Black did face any real problem, although in the end the situation became tricky, when Black's King was placed at the center but White never had anything more than perpetual check.
Vachier-Lagrave 1/2 -1/2 Giri.
Another attempt of Berlin defence, which was deviated with 4.d3. After 5...d5!? Maxime decided not to check Anish's home preparation and chose to play quiet 6.Nbd2, but did not achieve any advantage in symmetrical position. For a shortwhile it seemed to become sharp, but a forced play led to an equal endgame, and draw was agreed soon.
